Trippier an unused substitute in opening-weekend victory over Southampton after coach Eddie Howe selected Tino Livramento at right-back
Everton are interested in signing defender Kieran Trippier after the England right-back told Newcastle United he wants to leave before the transfer window closes.
Telegraph Sport revealed last month that Trippier was expected to depart St James’ Park this summer and the defender has already put his house up for sale.
Trippier had been interested in a potential move to Saudi Arabia and there were discussions held over a transfer, but a firm offer from the Middle East failed to materialise.
Tentative interest has also been shown in him by Italian club Atalanta and Turkish champions Galatasaray. West Ham are also thought to have been monitoring his situation.
The 33-year-old, one of the top earners on Tyneside on more than £120,000-a-week, has fallen behind Tino Livramento – a £32 million signing from Southampton in 2023 – in the pecking order at right-back since the start of the season, although the former Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid star expressed a desire to leave weeks ago.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe asked Trippier to reconsider but the player wants to seek a new challenge and, crucially, moving to Everton would enable him to move closer to his family in the North West.
As a result, Trippier’s captain’s armband was handed to Bruno Guimaraes and he was demoted to vice-captain.
Bayern Munich lodged a bid for Trippier in January in an attempt to reunite him with his former Spurs team-mate and close friend Harry Kane, but Newcastle rejected the offer.
Trippier, who has two years left on his contract, has been a huge success on Tyneside since he arrived from Atletico for £15 million in January 2022. An established England international at the time, his willingness to join Newcastle’s relegation battle was the catalyst for players such as Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak to sign for the club.
For many Newcastle supporters, he is regarded as the best right-back to have played for the club in the modern era and remains a hugely popular figure in the dressing room.
The first thing to say about Trippier’s potential departure from Newcastle before deadline day is that manager Howe is still trying to persuade him to stay.
Not that he does not have faith in Livramento, the England Under-21 international signed as Trippier’s eventual replacement, but because he knows Newcastle will miss Trippier’s leadership qualities in the dressing room as much as his ability on the pitch.
Trippier is starting to show his age a little. The burst of speed from a standing start has weakened – as we saw at the European Championship this summer – and he picks up strains and knocks that curtail his effectiveness over the course of the season. He was playing with various physical ailments for much of last term.
Although Howe wants him to stay, that is largely because he wants top-quality cover for Livramento as well as a reliable voice to keep the squad in check behind the scenes.
The 21-year-old Livramento is the future and Trippier is – or so he fears – the past. The younger man, by 12 years, Tino – as he is known on Tyneside – will be first choice at right-back this season when fit.
He showed glimpses of his huge potential last season but had injury issues after coming off the back of a serious knee problem in his final year at Southampton.
Excellent as a one-on-one defender, the former Chelsea academy player also has the ability to drive forward in attack, offering lung-bursting overlapping runs down the right flank. He is skillful and quick, more than capable of beating players when he dribbles with the ball, as he showed in creating the goal for Isak in a 1-1 Champions League draw against Paris St-Germain last season.
Although he does not quite have the same quality with his crosses as Trippier, it is an area of his game he is working on.
Livramento is, basically, a younger version of Trippier. Many people think he will go on to play for England in the next couple of years and the time is right for Newcastle to put their faith in him.
In an ideal world, Trippier would remain at the club to offer competition as well as advice. But the older man wants to play every week and Newcastle, if they are honest, need to get one of the club’s highest earners off the payroll if he is no longer first choice in his position.
